Spontaneous Delight

Hello, dear readers.

So, I've decided to write a blog.  I wrote one for my summer trip to Vienna (feel free to view here), and really liked the experience. I hope that others may enjoy my thoughts as well.

For those who don't know me, here's a small list of important things.  (I'm a big fan of lists.)

  • I am from the suburbs of Chicago, and I am a senior at Hope College in Holland, MI.
  • I'm one of two daughters, and I am very close with my family.  They're incredible people.
  • I love to travel. I haven't done enough, and never will. I'm also bad at dealing with travel stress.
  • I'm bad at dealing with stress...period. As my roommates and buddies can attest, this often manifests itself in bursts of frantic cleaning sprees, or a constant "grumpy cat" face.
  • I'm an oboe player.  I have played since I was 11, and I hope to play always.  The music is incredible, and learning and performing orchestral music is a huge passion of mine.
    • *Side note - from time to time, I'll probably mention reed making.  More specifically, I'll probably mention how frustrated I am about reed making.
  • I love to read, to write, to analyze, and to have good conversations with good people
  • Big thing - I'm planning to be a filmmaker. I'm really passionate about the process of making films, analysis, and the cast and crews that make the magic happen.

I'm sure this blog will develop a lot as time progresses, but those are some important things to note.

I recently came upon a quote to which I really connected and that I enjoyed.  This quote, a popular one from E.E. Cummings, is the following:

"We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit."

This quote will fuel a lot of my inspiration for this blog.  I hope to write about things that make me happy, things that make me think, and things of which I think more people should be aware. Through expressing my experiences in "spontaneous delight," I hope that I can bring some joy to you too.

To life!  And to the pursuit of spontaneous delights.
